It is with deep sorrow yet with lots of honor that we congregate here to put to rest a great personality, my mother, Anastasia Sorrento. I lack the word to describe the immense loss and grief that we as the family are going through during this difficult time. But, I want to share both the joys and the pains as we lay her to rest on this day.
We received the heartbreaking news of her demise on 10TH November at St Andrews Hospital, where she was admitted after a long time of fighting with cancer. Every day, we went to the hospital and saw her lying there with great pain; I learnt to realize how much of I needed her in my life. She fought hard and still kept that reassuring smile that all will be okay. She spoke comforting words to us and kept telling us that she will be just fine and will come back home to us. We had grown closer and saying the final goodbye is the hardest thing we as the family have to say today.

Maria Monterro, my mother was 55 years old, and though we would have loved to see her for many more years, she has left a great legacy of love, care and persistent prayers. Even in her immense pain, she never lacked so much love to share with us as her children, to dad, to her grandchildren and even those who have lived with her can bear witness to her great heart. My mother had a heart of an angel and touched so many hearts with her caring deeds. She has instilled the spirit of praying persistently to us as the family. No matter how hard it is to say goodbye to her today, I believe she rests with the other angels, and it is reassuring to us to know that she is no longer suffering the kind of pain she was experiencing anymore.

My mother valued taking care of people who were in need. I remember she would just go to the market to buy things to take to an old woman miles away. She would talk to them, give them hope, help them around and pray with them. She knew how to value life no matter how old it was. She believed in the importance of showing love and care to those around her and those who looked hopeless. She was always the smile that shown in many sad faces. I celebrate this great life today.

In the book of Ecclesiastes, it says:

“To everything, there is a season, a time for every matter under heaven; a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;a time to weep, and a time to laugh,a time to mourn, and a time to dance;a time to keep, and a time to cast away.”

Mother, you have been the strength in us, the pillar that will hold us together for eternity. We cry and mourn today because we know that deep inside our heart, we will dearly miss the mother you always were to us all. It saddens us to know that we will never see you again, but in our hearts you will remain and be remembered forever. We will keep your legacy, your teachings, and your memories alive. You are the blazing light that will never go off in our hearts.
